White Camellia In the book To Kill A Mockingbird there were a few items that represent/mean something . For example when Ms. Dubose gave Jem the white camellia the flower showed that Ms. Dubose is trying to keep white supremacy(KKK) alive . She gave it to Jem because she knew that he would keep it alive . In addition Ms. Dubose tells Jem he has to learn to pull the camellia out by the roots to get rid of them . This also symbolizes the need to attack the South's racism at its root . Jem keeps the camellia that Ms. Dubose gave him, but doesn't think of it as what it symbolizes. Also Atticus understands that despite it’s racisms to the south and the ugliness there is beauty in the south as well. Ms. Dubose doesn't see that all she sees is the negative about the south. Overall the white camellia means racism to the south and the white supremacy(KKK) this is what the white camellia symbolizes in the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” Chelsea Perez Mad Dog The rabid dog represented the racism that goes around Maycomb. It is said that when there is rabid dog around the county you must close your door and stay inside. The people are told to do this so that they don’t come in contact with the crazy animal. When Jem and Scout saw the dog they went straight to Calpurnia and she immediately called Atticus. As soon as Atticus had gotten to the house he commanded the children and Calpurnia to stay inside. He came to the house with Mr. Tate. After observing the scene Atticus was told to shoot the dog. The symbolism behind the citizens closing their doors is that they attempt to hide the fact that they are racist. They do this so that they aren’t judged by others even though most adults around the town are known to be racist. In addition the adults are proven to act like the rabid dog, this is shown by how if the whole town were to be together their attitudes would resemble the rabid dog in the manner of them speaking very loudly and giving harsh opinions on the opposite race.-Bella Nut Grass The nut grass in the book, “To Kill A Mockingbird” is used to show racism in the book. So Ms. Maude kills the nut grass to represent her killing racism. Ms. Maudie is against racism, she does not agree that it should exist. In the book it talks about how she love everything else she grows except the nut grass. It is talked about how it's not liked because it does not stop spreading. This is like how racism in the community won’t stop spreading. Even if you kill the racism just like nut grass it will grow back. This will continue on and on and never end. So what Ms. Maudie does is try to prevent the nut grass so that it takes a while to grow back. Snow man The snowman in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” this is used to show white supremacy. This is shown when it snows for the first time in Maycomb in a long time. Scout and Jem get off from school because of the snow. So they decides to make a snowman on their day off. Because there is not enough snow to make a snowman they make it with mud too. They make the inner layer out of mud and the outer layer of white snow. This is showing white supremacy by the white snow on top of the mud. In addition to the thought, whites have more power than blacks so they are higher up on the snowman. But the blacks have little to no rights so they are low on the snowman. Mockingbird In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” the mocking represents innocence and it's a sin to kill a mockingbird . There are a few characters in the book that are viewed as innocent. For example, Tom Robinson because he did nothing to Mayella , but Bob Ewell wanted him in jail so he put the blame on Tom . Another character that is viewed innocent in the book was Boo Radley, since he protected Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell when he was trying to hurt them. In Addition he was kept in his house for most of his life he couldn't really do anything. To sum up the bird was a meaning of innocents . |
